Filming a West Mill Wedding in Derby: Olivia & Charles's Story

As a wedding videographer based on the border of Derbyshire, I get asked all the time which venues I'd recommend filming at, and West Mill in Derby is consistently one of my favourites. I was lucky enough to film here again recently for Olivia and Charles's wedding, and it reminded me all over again why this venue holds such a special place in my diary.

If you're planning a wedding at West Mill, or you're still deciding on a Derbyshire wedding venue and want an honest, experienced perspective from behind the camera, here's everything I love about filming here, and what made Olivia and Charles's day so special.

Why West Mill Is One of My Favourite Derbyshire Wedding Venues

West Mill is bursting with character. What makes it so special from a filming perspective is that everything happens within one building, spread across different floors, the ceremony, wedding breakfast, and evening reception all flow naturally from space to space, which makes for such a beautiful, immersive wedding film.

Before I even get to the wedding day itself, I have to mention the food, it's always exceptional. The West Mill team also genuinely look after their suppliers, which makes a real difference on a long wedding day. I always feel lucky when I see a West Mill wedding land in my diary.

Olivia & Charles's Wedding at West Mill

This wedding in particular was nothing short of exceptional. The speeches felt completely authentic, you could hear the emotion in every word, which is exactly what I hope to capture on film. (One lighthearted moment worth mentioning: the groom arrived with newly dyed hair, and for a split second, I didn't even recognise him!)

What Makes West Mill So Special to Film

The Confetti Tunnel

The confetti tunnel just outside the front door at West Mill is always so dreamy. As the couple steps outside, the wind catches the confetti and spirals it up into the air. My advice to couples: go with white confetti, and plenty of it, it drifts like snow and looks completely classic on film.

Reliable Speeches, Every Time

West Mill has a genuinely reliable mic system for speeches. This might sound like a small detail, but as a videographer it's a must, I need to hear every word clearly to capture the speeches properly, and so do your guests.

The Lighting, in Every Season

The lighting at West Mill is something else. This venue works beautifully in every season, the light hits the windows differently depending on the time of year, which makes each space feel unique and gives me so much to work with behind the camera.

Recent Upgrades to the Gallery

At the time of writing, West Mill has just upgraded their gallery area, reinvesting in this historic space. I can't wait to film in it for the first time in the coming weeks.

Nature, Wildlife, and the Grounds

One of my favourite things about West Mill is the nature surrounding it, the sound of running water and glimpses of wildlife often find their way into the final film. Choose West Mill for a Spring wedding and you'll also be greeted by beautiful daffodils across the well-kept grounds.
